Some of these factors have already been eliminated: host and port
reachability for example.
I think that Mr Halle may be better served by seeking local or hired
SMTP expertise.
In any case, he should be aware that this matter is not only OT but
potentially extremely hazardous.
Mail is like the phone system: Hell hath no fury like those (the PHB,
the CIO, your colleagues) without email.

If Mr Halle wants to continue to investigate this matter, he should
trace the tcp data flow for mail from the source host with a sniffer
like tethereal (don't use tcpdump unless you can read ASCII bytes) eg
tethereal -x -s1500 -w <path_to_pcap_save_file> port smtp
After the trace is started, he can then send some mail with echo BLAH |
mail [email protected] and then post the results - the text output
- to someone he thinks may be interested, not the list.
