I have seen this problem on our network, but only periodically.  It was
actually an issue with the PCMCIA cards we were using.  I either had to
disable/enable the card to get rid of the error, restart the laptop, or
use another brand of cards.  Sometimes I also had to reboot both the
laptop and the gateway.

FYI: We have been using Linksys PCMCIA cards with Linksys WAP54G access
points without any problems.  We have a gateway/authserv setup running
on separate machines on top of Vector Linux 4.0.
