I am not quite sure what you are up to, but we also use III and when my patrons want to authenticate to access databases on this server or others they have rights to we use a product called EZ-Proxy created by http://www.usefulutilities.com This product can authenticate several ways. I have it authenticating my students against their imap accounts on the email server. I have set up an authentication scheme for III, but it is pretty rough -- it actually telnets to the server for authentication rather than using the API. Currently, we're running NoCat in open mode, but we may need to authenticate eventually, so it's on my list either to clean up this arrangement, or figure out how to use the API.
