I just wanted to make a short announcement that I am very excited about.
On June 1st, Sortova Consulting Group's OpenNMS services and support
business merged with Blast Internet Services. Blast is a services
company focused on network and web-enabled application development.
Those of you who have been doing this network thing for awhile may
recognize Blast from the BLAST file transfer protocol (which we still
maintain).
Blast is also a small ISP, and thus they bring an end-user focus to
OpenNMS.
With Blast's development experience coupled with Sortova's network
management experience, I expect great things from this new partnership.
With the addition of the people on the Blast team, OpenNMS will
continue to grow and remain the best open-source network management
solution available.
In addition, Blast produces its own distribution of Linux, called White
Dwarf (http://www.whitedwarflinux.org/), which is highly optimized to
run on embedded devices with as little as 16 MB of RAM. We have seen a
disturbing trend of popular Linux distributions to grow in size and
include everything but the kitchen sink, which while fine for a desktop
can degrade the ability for a server to realize the most out of the
available hardware. Current White Dwarf packages include Apache,
Postfix and MySQL, which in many cases are all that's needed to provide
an affective web presence. Due to White Dwarf's small footprint, it
really shines on larger machines. Expect to see lots of fun things
develop in this area in the next few months.
In the last year we, the OpenNMS community, have demonstrated how the
open-source model can work in network management. It has been an utter
delight to be involved with this project, and I consider myself a lucky
man. Thank you for your work, your interest and your support.
