OpenNMS 1.3.2 Released

It's been over a year since our last unstable release, and at times I
think getting 1.3.2 out the door was like birthing an elephant. Parts of
OpenNMS were totally rewritten, and entirely new build system was
implemented, and tons of new features have been added, as well as
scalability improvements that add at least one order of magnitude to what
OpenNMS 1.2 can do.

But first, this code is "unstable". While every effort has been made to
insure its quality, it will have bugs. While doubtful, it may suddenly
crash just after mailing all of your personal information to Nigeria. You
have been warned.

Now that that's out of the way, we hope you'll be impressed with the new
OpenNMS. This will become version 2.0 once we get the last few features
added, bugs squashed and (gasp) some documentation written.

The documentation on 1.3 is real weak. We are trying to keep the wiki up
to day, so some places to start would be the OpenNMS 1.3 page
(http://opennms.org/index.php/OpenNMS_1.3). While the best thing would be
to install OpenNMS 1.3.2 fresh, there is also an upgrading page
(http://opennms.org/index.php/Upgrading_from_1.2.x_to_1.3.x). Check out

OpenNMS 1.3 requires Java 5 (not Java 6), Tomcat 5.5, RRDTool 1.2, and a
PostgreSQL greater than 7.4. Note that the default storage method has been
changed from RRDTool to JRobin (and this can be changed in the
rrd-configuration.xml file). Also, we are moving the default install on
most platforms to /opt/opennms (all lower case).

The first thing you'll notice is that the GUI looks different, and you can
log in and log out. The GUI style is the work of Brad Haynes in the UK -
and I think it is very nice. The underlying code uses the Spring framework
and this should also help us reach our goal of being able to
internationalize the OpenNMS GUI. We have also added to ability to monitor
services remotely using a java webstart application. Users can install a
small java app on a remote system (including windows) and this will
connect back to the main OpenNMS instance to determine what it should
monitor from its point of view.

All in all the team has put a lot of effort into 1.3.2 and I hope you find
it useful. Remember to report bugs to Bugzilla
(http://bugzilla.opennms.org) and look forward to more rapid releases in
the near future. RPMs should be available on Sourceforge. Note that Debian
builds will not be immediately available due to our use of maven
conflicting with how Debian likes to build packages and the fact that our
Debian maintainer has been busy with other things.
