OpenNMS Version 1.1.1 Released

Gang:

OpenNMS 1.1.1 has been released.

Before I get into the feature list, which most of you will skip anyway,
let's talk about installing it.

The biggest caveat is that 1.1.1 (and 1.2) requires Tomcat 4.1.18 or
greater. Between 4.0 and 4.1, Tomcat changed the way it handled certain
things such that navigating through our webUI was broken in one or the
other. We couldn't find a way to make both happy, so we decided to move to
4.1.

This causes a problem because of the way it is packaged: 4.1 is not seen
as an upgrade to 4.0, but instead as a separate product. So you can't just
do an "apt-get upgrade". This is talked about below.

Using the "lynx" installer
--------------------------

For Red Hat Linux versions 7 and 8, and Mandrake version 8:

Use the lynx installer: lynx --source http://install.opennms.org | sh

This will take care of the Tomcat issue for you.

For Mandrake version 9:

We now have beta level support for using the lynx installer on Mandrake 9.
Two points:

1) I find that it will hang on the line "updating urpmi.conf". I usually
wait ten seconds, and hit Ctrl-C and the rest of the install goes by just
fine.

2) We only support the installation of the development tree (unstable) in
this beta.

For Mac OS X:

The lynx installer supports Mac OS X, but doesn't do much post-install
work. Read the README file referenced at the end of the install and follow
its instructions.

Using apt:
----------

Apt for RPM will work just fine if you first remove the Tomcat 4.0
packages. Use "rpm -e" with the "--nodeps" option, then "apt-get update"
and "apt-get upgrade".

Debian, UnitedLinux, Solaris:
-----------------------------

The Debian and UL packages are still in process, because we changed a bit
over the weekend and we didn't leave enough time for those maintainers to
get finished.

Solaris packages for Solaris 8 (SPARC) are available on the FTP site. You
will need to run install.pl manually, which requires a number of
environment variables to be set. I hope to have a How-To in the directory
by this afternoon.

Other Notes:
------------

If you jumped ahead and downloaded RPMs labeled 1.1.1-0, download the
1.1.1-1 RPMs. There should be no configuration file changes, but we did
change install.pl.

Features:
---------

Okay, the new features are detailed in the release notes:

but I'll summarize here:

Traps and Events:

o Traps are now associated with nodes, if the IP address of the
  interface that sends the trap is known to OpenNMS.

o If it is not known, a newSuspect event will be generated. This
  functionality can be disabled in the trapd-configuration.xml file.

o Added new events for ADIC, Foundry and Dell OpenManage.

o Improved the output of mib2opennms.

Reports:

o Dave Miller wrote a module called Key SNMP Customized (KSC) Reports
  that allows you to build pre-fab performance reports that can span
  interfaces, devices, etc. This is really cool, and all the configuration
  is done through the webUI. He wrote a How-To available here:

o When looking at standard performance reports, there are buttons to
  change the scale between day/week/month/year.

Response Time data:

o The RRAs for the response time data are now stored in the poller
  configuration file, per package. This will allow those in other
  locales that use a comma "," instead of a period "." for the decimal
  to use their proper locale.

o The following new monitors now support response time data: Citrix, FTP,
  HTTPS, IMAP, POP3, SMTP and TCP. Note that you still need to configure
  the rrd-repository and ds-name in the poller configuration file, as
  well as modify the response-graph.properties file to collect and display
  this data.

WebUI Improvements:

o The events page now has a built-in two minute refresh.

o If a node has Response Time reports, they are available from the node
  and interface pages.

o If a node supports HTTP (defined as HTTP on port 80) there is a link to
  its home page on the node and interface pages.

Other Features:

o HTTPS now uses the non-blocking I/O classes, which should speed up
  polling and discovery.

o In the poll-outages configuration file, setting an IP address for an
  outage calendar to "match any" will match any address in the poller
  package that uses that calendar.

o Increased the contactinfo field in the usersNotified table to 64
  characters (up from 32).

Fixed numerous bugs.

Many people contributed in small and large ways to this release, and I try
to credit all of them in the CHANGELOG and when I commit to CVS. I would
list them here, but I am afraid I'd leave someone out, and anyway, they
know who they are (grin).

OpenNMS 1.1.2:
--------------

We are now on a big bughunt for the next couple of weeks, when you should
see 1.1.2. This will be the release candidate for 1.2, and no new features
will be added after its release, only bug fixes.

The big new features in 1.1.2 will be incorporating Derek's map code into
the main build, and Nick is building some HTTP monitoring improvements.
