I like <canvas> too, but there are two things about it that irk me:

1. Possible patent encumberment -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canvas_(HTML_element)#Intellectual_property_over_canvas
2. Lack of support for rendering text

I've seen a clever workaround for (2) that pre-renders a font into a  
big PNG image, shoves the bits of that PNG file into a Javascript  
array, and then takes slices out of the big image and plops them onto  
the canvas.  (1) worries me, though.
