I've been holding out a bit and working out of band exploring a few  
different AJAXian toolkits.  I have looked a bit at what Wicket is  
doing and I admit it is pretty cool and something we should consider (/ 
me gives joed the nod)...

There are some many very compelling AJAX toolkits and frameworks out  
there for web development.  There is plenty of Google on this topic so  
I won't recreate all the in this email (I'm actually cross posting  
some of this from my note to the OGP thread about DevJam later today).

Picking tool for a new software development project is one thing but  
finding something that works well with the architecture we currently  
have in place for OpenNMS, I keep finding myself back in the DWR camp.

The 3.0 development code is drops quite nicely into OpenNMS because of  
all the work that has been done to get Spring MVC and HibernateDAOs in  
place.  It is quite compelling and doesn't require a lot of  
complicated build infrastructure that our current work with GWT has  
shown.  I mention GWT because the code you right is mostly in Java.   
It also support what the call "Reverse AJAX".  Let's just say that I'm  
very much in the DWR camp because of the, not required, but very nice  
integration with Spring MVC and Spring AOP.  The mailing list is  
active and well supported.

Soon after we branch for 1.6, I'll be creating a feature branch in  
trunk for an example DWR OpenNMS sample that the OGP and the community  
can investigate if they so choose.

As far as Maps go, I'm still in the Canvas tag camp that was  
demonstrated last year at DevJam.  Apple even has a coding head start  
on the Canvas Tag (well, they should since the invented it ;-) and is  
used quite a bit in iPhone.  It is a low memory footprint and great  
performance.
