Dashboard not working after fresh install of opennms 1.8.17 on ubuntu server 11.10

I'm new to OpenNMS and I'm also new to Open source in general.  I have used
the guide on the opennms wiki and they were very helpful.  The installation
went well and I am collecting data on over 400 interfaces.  When I look at
the categories on the default page for admin I see all of my network
interfaces listed.  When I look at the dashboard however I see 0 for 0 in
all categories.  After reading the wiki on the Dashboard I realized that
there is a difference between the main categories and
the surveillance categories.  I followed the instructions to
create surveillance groups and add nodes in bulk to that group and I have
also manually added nodes to the surveillance groups by editing the node.
 It seems to accept the nodes fine but they still don't show up in the
dashboard.  I also went throught the configuration example for creating a
dashboard for a specific user and it still showed 0 nodes under the
surveillance categories.  Is there a bug or maybe an sql issue that might
be stopping the data from being reported in the dashboard?
