I will try the debug method to see what is going on  .   As for bug Bug 4278 – Memory leak when mod_facl is used and mod_facl,  per TJ, this bug was fixed in 1.3.6rc3 and we are running 1.3.6 stable version.

I've had this problem, described in
http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4278

as wild guessm, I would try disabling mod_facl
