Virtual Directories

Dear List Members,

I want to create virtual directories in users home folder, i.e.
users home is /home/user1, I want folder /files/data1 to be "listed" in
user1's root folder as "data1" when he logs in.

I tried to use symlinks, which works fine, but I wanted to ask if there
is any other solution, like storing real and virtual directories
in file or sql table.

One more question is about permissions, I can't find any other way to
set permissions on folders other than file system level permissions.
Is there such kind of?
