The motivation, if I remember it correctly, was that this is how it's supposed to be, according to Microsoft. For example, the MS client behaves just the same. If you want the left-handed setting, you'll need to configure this on the RDP server. Having tried this approach for almost a year, I can't say I'm convinced that this was the right decision. It's makes me frustrated all the time. We could consider a new option that controls the behaviour. Feel free to re-open bug 1693905 if you want.
