Newbie: Using rdesktop and port forwarding

I'm making my first attempt at using rdesktop to connect to a server
behind a firewall, and wonder if my scheme will work, and if so, if
anyone can help me fill in the crucial details.

I have both a Windows 2003 Server and a Debian etch host behind a
firewall. The firewall blocks Remote Desktop Connections (port 3389) but
allows SSH. The Debian host has rdesktop 1.5.0 on it, installed from the
Debian package. I'd like to connect to the W2003S using Remote Desktop
to control it from outside the firewall. I think this should be possible
with these steps:
  * use a Linux host running XWindows from outside the firewall to
connect to the Debian host inside the firewall using SSH with XWindows
forwarding.
  * use the Debian host inside the firewall to connect to the W2003S
host using rdesktop, and forward this connection to the external Linux
host.

Can anyone tell me if this scheme will work? If you were doing this, is
this the way you'd do it? Is there another preferred method that might
be more straightforward or easier? If this is the best, can anyone
suggest exactly how this would be done? I don't have any experience with
rdesktop or ssh port forwarding yet, and wanted to know if I'm heading
in the right direction.
