I "think" that this is because rdesktop does not support the latest version of the RDP protocol in Windows 2008. There have been a number of posts about this, but I wasn't paying attention. I think you just need to downgrade the security level of RDP on your Windows server. You might need to disable "Network Level Authentification", but I am guessing, and your best bet will be google "rdesktop "windows 2008"". Googling your error message also seemed to get a lot of hits around the same topic. I would also make sure you are on a recent rdesktop version 1.6+. And don't forget to review the event log on the Windows server, particularly the security log - might give some clues. Sorry my response is largely passing you back to Google, but given the lack of response on this list, I felt that my very poor reply might be better than nothing.
