o hai,
try retyping
/key channel channelname set usr123

where '/key channel' and 'set' you type must
channelname and usr123 should match your expectations.

i just succeeded in securing a channel with a password
my log:
/j klf
/cmode klf +k
/cmode klf +l 5
/cmode klf +f
/key channel klf set usr123

if any of the above fails, you should see anything different from
[21:16] *** Private key set to channel klf
[21:24] [*@ptmhd] [3:klf(+klf)] [Act: 1]
