I think it is generally desirable to keep line length below 80 chars. It is advisable to keep a margin for quotations in initial postings (e.g. only use 72 chars) and news-/mail-aware editors offer the option to reformat paragraphs of quoted lines that are at the same level, for use when an exceptionally high number of quotation levels is reached.
