slrn and UTF-8

Hello,

I know this has been an issue many months ago, but I couldn't find any new
developments in this matter. Also I haven't been able to browse this list's
archives for some reason (sourceforge gives a 500 Internal server error
message when trying to get to the archives).

Anyway, I was a happy slrn user until, in the course of my recent Debian
sarge->etch transition, I defaulted to an UTF-8 console environment. Since
then, German umlauts look like this:

Daf<FC>r d<FC>rfen sie dann Elektromoped fahren.

The headers say:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

and when I look at the exported message, I find it to be correctly encoded
in ISO-8859-1. Moreover, "isolatin" appears as supported charset:

So what's the deal? Is slrn actually actively supported any more, or will I
have to look at an alternative newsreader? The homepage seems to be of
October 2004 vintage; this doesn't look too active any more..
