Thanks for your reply Peter.
I've been playing with slrn and slrnpull this afternoon
and am making some progress but it's a hard slog.

I have made some changes based on your information:
set generate_message_id 0
set post_object "slrnpull"
set use_slrnpull 1

I'm not sure what slrnpull_root should be so I set /etc/bashrc to:
export SLRNPULL_ROOT=/var/lib/slrnpull/
and also made a slrnpull/out.going directory there.

Is this place correct for the news spool? Shouldn't it be in the users
home directory? That's where ~/Mail lives with Thunderbird and Forte
Agent files but I'd like to keep slrn news separated.

When I execute 'slrn' I get to a screen that says
server: /var/spool/slrnpull/news
and /var/spool/slrnpull contains slrnpull.conf
and data, news and out.going directories.

Next I'm trying to reload the list of newsgroups which didn't seem to
get saved when I issued
slrn --create

slrn --create isn't getting the newsgroup list anymore.

I also tried
slrnpull --new-groups
but that stalls on getting authenticated from my news server
and there doesn't seem to be a way in slrnpull.conf to authenticate.

After that my next task is to try and subscribe to a newsgroup.
