Where should groups.dat be located?

I'm using slrn and slrnpull and have spent several days configuring them.

When I get the list of groups, I see them in the slrn window, subscribe
to a group, then quit slrn.
The list of groups doesn't appear next time I start slrn, probably
because the groups.dat file is in the wrong location. Groups.dat and
groups.dat.time are being put in /usr/local/bin where the script below runs.

To get the list of groups I first make sure
set write_newsrc_flags 0
is in ~/.slrnrc

and then issus
slrn --nntp -h news.west.earthlink.net -a -f groups.dat --create

which should start slrn and download the groups and put them in the file
groups.dat.

I presume that the '-f groups.dat' should have a path but have no idea
what the path should be.
