slrn works out of the box with UTF-8 as long as you
 - take the slrn from CVS
 - compile it against libslang2

There are problems with corrupt postings which have undeclared 8bit
characters in the headers or the body, but patches for that exist.

There is also the problem, that Umlauts are destroyed when ROT13ing 
the posting, but again, a patch exists.

It is enough if you have a compiler available for that machine, you
can compile and install slang2 and slrn from CVS in you home
directory.
