I'm not so sure about that - one of my examples (eric's posting) below doesn't
contain any X-Face stuff. Maybe you could verify that?

I've tested with both of them:

 - Slrn 0.9.8.1pl2 [2007-01-25] (Debian Unstable)
 - Slrn 0.9.8.1pl2 [2005-02-17] (current CVS HEAD, no further patches applied)

On Debian Linux/AMD64 with slang 2.0.7. They show the same behaviour.

What didn't get mentioned so far is that slrn does display some information on
such posting in its status line:

 | [17131] Read 1/42 lines so far at 2.28kB/sec
 | [1244] Read 1/11 lines so far at 8.70kB/sec2

Nothing happens after that but slrn eats up all resources till gets
killed.

No. I've (randomly) checked some other X-Face postings like:
