the subject does not matter for threading -
In-Reply-To and  References do! feature.

as for detecting followups:  generate your own IDs -
this makes it pretty easy to detect followups to
your own posts.  and you can use google groups
with their notification to tell you about such
followups via email  not perfect, but easy. :)
