You don't have to set the variable for all servers, only for broken ones.

E.g., if you set $NNTPSERVER for each server you use, you can add this 
to .slrnrc:

#if$NNTPSERVER <broken-server>
        set broken_xref 1
#endif

Or, if you choose the server with the -h option, you can use multiple .slrnrc 
files, e.g.

$ slrn -h <broken-server> -i .slrnrc-broken

(If you do it this way, I suggest keeping configuration options that affect 
all servers in a global .slrnrc file and including it with the "include" 
command in each server-specific config file. It saves making the same changes 
to multiple files.)
