That's a good suggestion.

My concern was more that it does no longer take any xref headers - which 
are ok most of the time. I just wanted broken_xref as a fallback 
solution as soon as the ARTICLE NUMBER command fails. As I see now, it 
always takes ARTICLE MESSAGE-ID

However, it did not feel slower later on - I don't know whether it has a 
local effect or just on the server's side.
