It is showing up as ? because your character set is US-ASCII (as probably determined by your locale). Try putting charset display "ISO-8859-1" in your .slrnrc file. The problem is that slrn has no clue what character to map the byte 0xE9 to, since that byte lies outside the range of the US-ASCII character set.
