Hi Andrew,

on sparc we have a non-gnu (while gnu tar was available as gtar)

The tar which came with MacOSX 10.4 was 1.14 only:

tar (GNU tar) 1.14 +CVE-2006-0300 +CVE-2006-6097
Copyright (C) 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

I don't know why Apple's choice was to use 2004 software within 2006.
