Consider the following two articles: ================================================ Newsgroups: pjr.test From: [email protected] Subject: test Message-ID: <[email protected]> test ================================================ Newsgroups: pjr.test From: Peter J Ross <[email protected]> Subject: Re: test References: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> In pjr.test on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 20:31:41 +0100, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > test test ================================================ The attribution line in the second article is obviously not ideal, since the email address appears twice, but the "From:" line in the first article, from which the attribution line is generated, is permitted by the relevant RFCs. In my slrnrc I have set followup_string "In %n on %d, %r <%f> wrote:\n" Clearly, %r and %f are generating the same string whenever the simplest permitted "From:" syntax is used. Can this be fixed? I wish I could offer a patch, but I know my limits. The bug was reported in news.software.readers by Jeff Relf. It's probably a very old bug, since I've been seeing the duplication for years and assuming it was other people's software's fault. (Incidentally, I tried to test what would happen if I used "From: Peter J Ross" without an email address, but both slrn and leafnode rightly complained. However, such broken "From:" lines are sometimes seen on Usenet.) -- PJR :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Register Now & Save for Velocity, the Web Performance & Operations Conference from O'Reilly Media.
