If you're reading from a server (as opposed to a spool you control) 
eventually you'll find that all articles will disappear through article 
expiration.  You might find it useful to either make your own server or 
save articles you really want to refer to later.

Typical use is to read an article (which marks it as read), 
forward/reply/save an article, and move on to other articles.  When one 
is done with one newsgroup one typically marks everything read by 
"catching up" before moving on to the next newsgroup.  If I recall 
correctly, this action is bound to "c".
