This is expected unless you have set read_active 1 in your .slrnrc file. Otherwise, slrn will not query the server about information regarding unsubscribed groups. The default value of read_active dates from the days before the widespread use of high-speed internet when reading the server's active file was relatively time consuming. I hope this helps.
