Yes, that was the other thing that I needed to do.
So to recap, and for purposes of archives, here is what I think
would be the procedure next time.
1)Check my .jnewsrc.dsc for the target group.
    (am looking for 'alt.os.linux.debian:alt.os.linux.debian')
    If it is not there,
run slrn -d to update the file. Will take some time, because
	it is a huge download.
2)To .jnewsrc, add the target group: example -
    alt.os.linux.debian!
  3)Add the the following format
    NEWSGROUP_NAME MAX_ARTICLES_TO_RETRIEVE NUMBER_OF_DAYS_BEFORE_EXPIRE
	to my slrnpull.conf file.
4)Run the cron code to verify and check for errors, in my case it
  is
  /usr/local/bin/slrnpull -h news.supernews.com -d
  /usr/local/news/slrnpull > /dev/null
and check the log file, which should be in the same directory
as slrnpull.conf for error messages OR just leave off the
  redirection to /dev/null
6)Shutdown and restart. Subscribe and Bob is happy.
And boobs like me should put this all in their slrnrc file.
  thanks
