It's the number of headers marked unread, but you only get prompted if 
that number is greater than query_read_group_cutoff (default of 100). 
See http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/slrn-manual-6.html#ss6.80 for more 
information. You can use a prefix argument on entering the group (ESC 1 
Return) if you want to see how many headers are on the server.

Without a clear description of what the sync operation does, it's tough 
for me to say. As far as I know, Thunderbird and slrn do roughly the 
same thing but at different times. slrn will read header overview data 
(or headers, depending on details beyond the scope of this post) on 
entry into a group. Thunderbird reads header data (perhaps from a news 
overview, I don't know) when one connects an NNTP account.

If you're looking for offline storage of articles, consider using 
slrnpull or running your own NNTP caching server then connecting a 
newsreader to that server.
