found out how to do this on the news group news.aoftware.readers

if I mark the group read with "c" while I'm in my group list
it marks the group read without disturbing the articles, and
the number of headers to get by default is marked to 0, if I get
new headers is gets the new ones

"c" is listed Catch-up on the bottom pane of keyboard functions
while in the group list
