I'm apparently subscribed only for digests and not
individual mails, so I may have missed something someone
already said.

I've tried slrn on Fedora. I have to specify snews://
in the host name and put the host and port in the
slrn command, and ahve to manually enter my username
and password when prompted instead of it coming
out of the .slrnrc file (at least for my tests so
far, which have been brief): but that does appear
to get slrn to make a secure connection looking at
what "netstat -a -i tcp" says about the connection.

I did 'slrn --version' on both systems and compared
the results. There is a difference: the version
for Fedora is one point release newer, and the version
of S-Lang is considerably newer. My expectation at
this point is that this is the cause of the problem.

The appropriate software update utilities for each
of these 'flavors' of Linux say they're up-to-date
for slrn and S-Lang. I'd like to try to get Mint
up to the same version as Fedora to see if that
is in fact the problem, then try to get slrn to
auto-authenticate using the values in .slrnrc when
making a secure connection. Since Mint is based
on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian, and Ubuntu
and Mint both seem to boast about being current
and user friendly, it seems odd to me that
Fedora would have a version of S-Lang that is
two years newer. Does anyone know if there is
an up-to-date kit (slrn or S-Lang) for Mint /
Ubuntu?

Thanks.

Bart.
