No, it has nothing to do with the version of slang.  As stated in
another email, you will need to add an nnrpaccess line to your .jedrc
file, e.g.,

   nnrpaccess "snews://secnews.netscape.com:563" "username" "password"

as specified in the README.SSL file.  If you still have problems, add

  --debug /tmp/slrn.log

to the command line.  After exiting slrn, look at the contents of
/tmp/slrn.log.

The slang library is dead-simple to build.  You can get it from
<http://www.jedsoft.org/releases/slang/>.   Assuming you download
slang-2.3.0.tar.bz2, do:

  $ bzip2 -d slang-2.3.0.tar.bz2
  $ tar xf slang-2.3.0.tar
  $ cd slang-2.3.0
  $ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
  $ make
  $ make check
  $ sudo make install
