I managed to reliably reproduce that problem on my testing system, so I could
track it down... (On ext2fs, so reiserfs had nothing to do with the bug.)
The problem was that .chain would get only partially unlocked in certain
situations, and the next lock attempt would lock up everything.

I think I've got it fixed now. I'll test the code a bit more, and then produce a
new patch.
