This was a probably a vague explanation on my part.  I didn't intend
to suggest a fall-back filename.  I intended to suggest a fall-back
URL.

So the only valid example from your list above is:

  http://somesite.hosted.example.com/default.xml

Now I see where your concerns about crazy-ass spiders wandering the
whole site "tree" are coming from.
