As James hinted, HTTP conditional GET and gzip offer more immediate
gains. But I reckon they're vaguely in a useful area (with a feeling
that their approach might well have holes).

The same basic idea has been hammered around quite a bit by the Atom
folks -  discussion about using RFC 3229 (HTTP diffs) with feeds
(there's even a $5000 bounty!):
