Well, in a contest over validity I'd bet heavily on Sam and the validator
against the horrendously inconsistent 2.0 specs.  Where are you seeing
problems?

A point though, the validator is undergoing some improvements.  Sam et al,
are working hard on making it even more thorough in it's testing of not just
core RSS but also modules, other namespace and the emerging atom specs.  So
if you run into difficulties or questions make you you bring them to the
attention of the validator's mailing list.  They're all VERY quick to
respond.  And unlike other things claiming to be validators, their code is
freely available and they welcome updates.
