It doesn’t say links have to be absolute, but it doesn’t explain
how to resolve relative URIs either. Therefore aggregators have
no canonical basis on which to decide, and so they do different
things. Hence if you use relative URIs, regardless of what they
are relative to, they will fail to resolve for some portion of
your readership.

Conclusion: don’t use relative URIs.

Corollary: the validator is right to call this out.
