I'm almost sure now that the problem I was seeing wasn't a result of the
detection code per se. Every feed I tried (served as text/xml) would fail.
Feeds served as application/xml would work fine though. I've since
uninstalled IE7 with the plan to do a fresh install and see if that fixes
anything, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet. I'll let you know when
I have more details.

At the very least I'd expect IE (and Firefox for that matter) to be capable
of recognizing all valid RSS feeds served with one of their recommended
content-types.
