black screen windows 10. when laptop lid is closed

on connecting to vnc server on my win10 laptop I get black screen _if
laptop lid is closed_
if I pop the lid , I get a screen image on the client.
i do see a cursor on the black screen and i *think* it is actually active
on the server since i can later see where i have clicked off various dialog
windows.
it appears as if there has to be a setting on windows 10 to enable
something but i cant see where i could make  a change.
i already have 'do nothing' set for the 'when kid is closed' option in
power settings
any thoughts?
