IIRC following symlinks was removed long time ago to avoid symlink
attacks.

we should fix the inconsistency (in either way).

works for me - I use something like the following:

foob.ar	~/.tin/NEWSRCS/${NNTPSERVER-localhost}	foo	f
barf.oo	~/.tin/NEWSRCS/${NNTPSERVER-localhost}	bar	b
*	~/.tin/NEWSRCS/${NNTPSERVER-localhost}
