I've certainly never seen this except when there has been a good
explanation.  The times it has happened that have confused me are
times when tin (or more likely my remote terminal session) has hung
for some reason and I've forgotten about it.  I then run another tin
session which exits normally and all appears to be well until
something 'clears up' the hung session and that old tin exits and
writes an 'old' .newsrc file.
