looks like the server(s) you use do not like tins initial command sequence.
you could compile tin with debugging enabled (DEBUG set in src/Makefile) and
start tin with
	tin -D 1 [your usual cmd-line flags]
and then look into the file
	/tmp/NNTP
this should show you where your server closes the connection. if you post
the file be sure to mask your username/password in the file.
