those are settings for the _attributes_ file, not for the tinrc - see tin(5)
manpage

I havn't used the related code for ages as I don't read any binarie groups.

that's it. 'l' (or right-arrow) enters the thread-level. depending on the
selected threading method you see a tree-view (references and both) or not
(multipart and subject only)
