In tin 1.9.6 the problem persists. I have tried the
same with another thread from another newsgroup, and
again, it was successfully saved in ~/News/..., but
none of its messages were visible when using 'tin
-R', after which the thread was marked as read...

With the new tin, I can't even get to the list of
newsgroups.
Without news.tin.org registered in newsauth, start-
ing tin yields:
Server expects authentification.
Please, eneter username: anton
I press enter, tin asks for a password. I press en-
ter again and tin writes:
NNTP authorization password not found for news.tin.org.
and exits. If I enter an empty login and password
tin exists silently. If I put some login and pass-
word in .newsauth, tin says:
Authorization failed for user: anton
