Sorry for misreading you.  1.9.6 is the latest  ver-
sion  available  via  MacPorts,  so I'll have yet to
figure out how to build a recent version myself...

Yes, that's it.  I had it in the  alias  for  'rtin'
because  my  other  server  does require initial au-
thenification.  It works now.  Could you  suggest  a
way to define for which servers to use the -A option
and for which not?  .newsauth doesn't seem  to  have
this setting...
