I don't know. But in over 2.5 years there has been many changes to the
source code and also the configure script (the changelog entry for 1.5.8
begins at line 1050). You would probably run into the same problems but
perhaps you would get a better warning or error message (and once you
get it compiled you don't need to do it a second time to get a recent
version).
