merging tables for speed

from what i see, it's possible (if using a single news server, 
otherwise it would introduce issues) to merge xref_headers and 
headers to get a great speed increase because that would eliminate a 
number of joins in many places.
anybody has any takes on this? am i missing something?

any comments are welcome
