You could just telnet into port 119 on your server and ask it directly. AUTHINFO USER name AUTHINFO PASS secret GROUP alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 Then you should get something back that looks like this: 211 1176599 47510213 48686811 alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 The first number on the line is the return code. You'll have to read the RFC - I forget what codes mean. You'll want to make sure you are getting a good return code which signifies that you successfully set your group to a group that exists on the server.
